The police officer who arrested Sen. Larry Craig, R-Idaho, in a men's restroom at the Minneapolis airport for allegedly looking to engage in gay sex wrote in his June report that he "recognized a signal used by persons wishing to engage in lewd conduct. Craig tapped his foot up and down and swiped his hand underneath the bathroom stall in which the undercover cop was sitting, according to the police report. Those actions led to Craig's arrest by Detective Dave Karsnia and the senator's guilty plea to a disorderly conduct charge. Craig told reporters today that he did nothing inappropriate and said his guilty plea was a mistake.

I n , when Calvin Burdine was awaiting sentencing for allegedly stabbing his gay lover to death, the prosecuting attorney encouraged the jury in his closing remarks to award Burdine the death penalty, rather than life in prison, on the grounds that sending a gay man to prison was akin to sending a kid to a candy store. After 17 minutes of deliberation, the jury obliged and sentenced Burdine to die. It would be fair to assume, with how queerness is marginalized in our society, that gay apps like Grindr would take measures to be inclusive. In a perfect world, a gay app would be a safe place, where Queers can escape the judgmental reality of our heteronormative society and build a sense of community along the way. As nice as values like inclusiveness and community are, Grindr has, in many cases, been proven to be divisive. On Grindr you can find a list of different categories of personal identities and sexual interests that you can choose to label your profile, and the categories on this list are organized in ways that create bias and often times result in segregation amongst the Queer community. This list makes no sense because several of these identities overlap, and users can only choose one, unless they pay for a membership to Grindr Xtra in which case they can choose three.
